Radiologie am Questerhof: Cloud archive as basis for innovation

Radiologie am Questerhof is an innovative private radiology practice and a long-standing customer of Telepaxx Medical Data. Until 2024, the practice used Telepaxx's previous Archive-as-a-Service solution, e-pacs, as a Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA). However, as the practice wanted faster data availability and easier exchange of DICOM images, it decided to modernize its image management and switch to the new Telepaxx solution, TMD Cloud . This customer reference summarizes the challenges that the new Software-as-a-Service solves for the practice and the specific improvements it brings to everyday work.

Radiologie am Questerhof: The interplay between people and technology

The practice Radiologie am Questerhof, which operated under the name Rheinische Radiologie Köln-Suelz until the end of 2025, offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including MRI, CT, digital mammography, and sonography. A key concern of the practice is to always be at the cutting edge of technology in order to ensure the quality of findings while minimizing radiation exposure for patients. To this end, the practice team also relies on modern methods such as artificial intelligence to support diagnosis and completely digital image transmission. Above all, efficient networking and fast image data exchange are very important for Radiologie am Questerhof in the context of cross-sector cooperation with other institutions.

The challenges: Growing IT costs and lack of flexibility

The radiology practice at Questerhof, has been using Telepaxx's e-pacs long-term archive for the secure archiving of patient images since 2016. This Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) reliably met the practice's requirements for efficient image data management for many years.

In 2023, however, the practice management team led by Dr. Schauer identified a need for modernization due to changed conditions and new challenges that had arisen:

  1. Complex infrastructure
The massive increase in data volumes also led to growth in investment in local hardware systems, their maintenance, and support.
  2. Complex data transfer
Numerous software systems were used to transfer DICOM images to referring physicians and patients, resulting in time-consuming processes.
  3. Slow data access
Depending on system load, images that were no longer stored locally were only available after long waiting times. This slowed down the diagnosis process.
  4. Locally restricted data access
X-ray, CT images, and other data could only be accessed locally at the practice location. This stood in the way of the desire for modern, more flexible working methods.

Due to the above developments, the practice management team sought a future-proof, modern image management solution that would solve the technical challenges of image archiving, meet the highest data protection standards, and simplify communication with other institutions.

The solution: migrating the image archive to the cloud as the basis for new services

After careful consideration, the radiology at Questerhof, headed by Dr. Verena Schauer and practice founder Dr. Peter Pickel, decided in 2023 to move to the cloud together with Telepaxx—partly because the legal framework in Germany had changed at that point, making the use of cloud solutions in healthcare legally compliant.

At this point, the practice management team was already convinced of the advantages of cloud technology. "Cloud solutions had long been our preferred option, especially for streamlining our IT infrastructure, enabling cross-location collaboration, and providing flexible access to image data. Since the legal framework was initially lacking, we used the time to examine various cloud concepts. Once legal approval was granted, we were able to move quickly into implementation. As a practice, we have relied on Telepaxx for many years, so we feel we are in good hands with the new cloud solution," explains Dr. Verena Schauer, practice owner and specialist in diagnostic radiology.

The decision to use TMD Cloud as manufacturer-neutral software-as-a-service enables Radiologie am Questerhof to archive image data securely on the one hand and, on the other, to easily exchange this image data with other treating physicians and access it flexibly. The exchange of images with other medical facilities is a particularly important aspect for Radiologie am Questerhof, as it will continue to work closely with its previous partner practice, Rheinische Radiologie Köln-Porz, even after the change of name at the end of 2025.

The migration of the existing e-pacs long-term archive to the TMD Cloud, Telepaxx's new cloud-based software-as-a-service solution, marks the transition for radiology at Questerhof from a local image management system that was difficult to network to a modern, flexible infrastructure. The new cloud archive not only enables the practice to archive DICOM data in a future-proof and low-maintenance manner, but also opens up access to new, value-adding functionalities.

QR code instead of patient CD: The radiology department at Questerhof relies on modern image transmission.

Based on the TMD Cloud archive, the radiology practice will soon be implementing additional additional functions to further optimize and modernize patient and referral management:

  • Digital image transmission via C5-certified QR code solution: With TMD Cloud, the radiology department at Questerhof has access to a QR code solution that meets the highest security requirements and the DLX standard thanks to C5 certification. This simplifies image transmission to patients and referring physicians for the practice team. The HealthDataSpace software previously used is thus being replaced.
  • Web importer for external image data: The practice will also use the web-based QR Code Importer to import external DICOM data from QR codes, CDs, or USB sticks into other practice software with just a few clicks via the TMD Cloud. This ensures that patient master data remains consistent and speeds up the import of external image data.
  • Mobile image access from any location: Via the TMD Cloud web portal, physicians will in future be able to access image data released to them from any Internet-enabled device, both within their own practice and in the referral network, and can make direct diagnostic assessments using the integrated medical viewer via Cloud PACS. This facilitates and accelerates cross-specialty and cross-location collaboration.
Dr. Verena Schauer, Head of Radiology Practice at Questerhof in Cologne

“We have long been convinced of the quality of Telepaxx solutions. The decision to migrate our existing image archive to the TMD Cloud was the logical next step in preparing our practice for the future. The seamless transition to cloud archiving and the integration of additional features such as digital image transmission and the QR code importer will improve our daily workflows in the long term. Our long-standing collaboration with Telepaxx and their data protection certificates give us the certainty that our patient data is secure and available at all times in the cloud. We are very satisfied with this decision."

The result: measurably faster and more connected work

The migration to the TMD Cloud has permanently optimized the radiology workflows at Questerhof and led to noticeable improvements:

  • Faster access times: Image data from the long-term archive is now available within seconds. The significantly shorter access time is particularly noticeable in cross-location collaboration.
  • Less local IT infrastructure: Migrating the image archive to the cloud has streamlined the local IT infrastructure, making it more cost-effective to operate.
  • Simpler communication with referring physicians: By bundling previously separate image workflows in the TMD Cloud as central image management software, the workload for practice staff is reduced, for example, when it comes to transmitting images to other treating institutions.

> 39 TB of DICOM data

Over 39 terabytes (TB) of image data are stored in the cloud (as of 11/25).

Instant retrieval

Access image data from the DICOM archive in the cloud in just a few seconds.

  • Higher level of security: By using Telepaxx's fully C5-certified image management software, the practice benefits from a higher level of data protection for sensitive patient data.
  • Flexible data access: The cloud archive with individually manageable access rights to individual image data via the associated web portal simplifies collaboration with partner practices as well as image retrieval from different locations and devices.

By using Telepaxx's TMD Cloud, the radiologie Radiologie am Questerhof benefits from a modern software-as-a-service solution that offers more than just secure storage of DICOM data. Audit-proof long-term archiving, digital image transmission, flexible image retrieval, and easy import of external data—the practice now handles all of this with Telepaxx's cloud-based software solution for efficient IT management and integrated image workflows.
