The customer: Cutting-edge medicine with relations to universities and research

RHOEN-KLINIKUM AG is one of the largest healthcare providers in Germany with direct relations to universities and research institutions. Every year, more than 800,000 patients are treated at the five sites in Bad Berka, Bad Neustadt, Frankfurt (Oder), Gießen and Marburg. With the RHOEN campus model, the company is implementing a forward-looking project that raises cross-sectoral medical care in rural areas to a new level and is geared to the growing needs of patients. The Clinic for Radiology at RHOEN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt was even certified by the German Radiological Society (DRG) for its expertise in the use of so-called sectional imaging procedures as one of 30 focus centers for cardiovascular imaging in Germany.

Challenge: A Central archive for image data

When RHOEN-KLINIKUM AG was looking for a new provider for its corporate archive, it was important that not only DICOM images from radiology could be stored in the long-term archive, but also data from other departments, such as cardiology. Another particular challenge for Martin Scherer, the deputy head of Group IT, and his team: The use of different PACS and the low bandwidths available in the five clinics.

"Implementing our long-term archiving with Telepaxx was the right decision and has proven itself in practice."

Solution: Vendor-neutral multi-modality archive (VNA)

To implement a legally compliant archiving of various image data, RHOEN-KLINIKUM AG opted for the digital long-term archive by Telepaxx Medical Data. Thanks to the standardized DICOM interface, images from the heterogeneous PACS landscape can be easily integrated into the group-wide archiving concept. This means that RHOEN-Klinikum is also ideally positioned to gradually standardize its PACS landscape as part of a convergence strategy. A total of five clinics - including the two university hospitals in Giessen and Marburg - send the images from the various modalities to the central long-term archive.
