Medical image data for research and training of AI-based software: Telepaxx Medical Data GmbH concludes collaboration agreement with Bayer AG's radiology business
- Mediation between clinics and practices as well as research institutions via the new AI Innovation Platform (AIIP)
- Better training of software with artificial intelligence for the healthcare industry
- Legally compliant use of anonymized DICOM data by hospitals and other healthcare facilities

Büchenbach/Munich, December 02, 2024, Telepaxx Medical Data, a leading software-as-a-service provider for medical image data management in the cloud, is one of five initial data partners of the new AI Innovation Platform (AIIP) of Bayer AG's radiology business. This is part of the innovations and product portfolio that the company is presenting at the current annual meeting of the Radiological Society of Northern America (RSNA) in Chicago.
The aim of the cooperation is to support the networking of medical institutions with researchers and developers in order to promote innovative healthcare solutions. At the same time, Telepaxx wants to offer its customers the opportunity to use their existing imaging data for research and development projects in a cloud-based, anonymized form and in compliance with data protection regulations. Telepaxx Medical Data and Bayer's own AIIP act as intermediaries between medical institutions such as hospitals or doctors' practices and data requesters such as research groups or AI developers.
Artificial intelligence needs high-quality data
In order to increase the acceptance of AI-based medical devices, they must function reliably. High-quality data in the development phase and thus during training form the foundation for this. In Germany, access to such training data is difficult in practice, as it is usually scattered in a decentralized manner or only available in an unstructured form. Researchers and developers outside of university institutions in particular have little or no access to high-quality training data.
As a partner of the AIIP, Telepaxx wants to help solve this challenge and mediate between data owners such as clinics and medical practices and data users such as researchers and AI developers.
A data archive with over 25 billion DICOM images
Telepaxx Medical Data has been reliably archiving and managing DICOM data for its customers for several decades - in particular images created using computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (see Figure 1). In total, the company currently manages over 25 billion DICOM images in several data centers in a GDPR-compliant and encrypted manner.
Telepaxx can search this data archive in consultation with its customers in order to filter out the cohort required for a research project. It is entirely up to the medical institution to decide whether it subsequently wishes to make the relevant data available for a joint research and development project with the institution requesting the data.
“Only in the case of a joint project will the selected data be transmitted to the AIIP and its protected data room in an anonymized form and in coordination with the healthcare facility,” explains Andreas Dobler, Managing Director of Telepaxx Medical Data.

Anonymization of data in accordance with legal regulations
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Health Data Utilization Act (GDNG) form the legal basis for the use of DICOM data for research and development.
The GDNG has the explicit aim of promoting research with health data in order to promote innovative healthcare products for the further development of healthcare and Germany as a research location. For example, the GDNG regulates cross-border data protection standards and the legally compliant processing of health data.
“Data protection has been our top priority since the company was founded. As an established partner of hospitals and radiology practices, it is part of our value proposition to archive medical imaging data securely and protect it from unauthorized access. At the same time, we also see the increasing demand from hospitals and developers of medical software products to use medical data for better healthcare and innovation. As a partner of AIIP, we want to mediate between all parties involved and support our customers in making their image data available for development projects.” comments Andreas Dobler, Managing Director of Telepaxx Medical Data, on the collaboration.
